35th Annual Chemistry Day Fast or Slow… Chemistry Makes It Go!

The 35th annual Chemistry Day is co-sponsored by the Kalamazoo Section of the American Chemical Society and the Kalamazoo Valley Museum.

This program supports the American Chemical Society’s National Chemistry Week and the online digital exhibit Tracing the Path, a historic look back on the tornado that touched down in Kalamazoo, Michigan, May 13, 1980.

Introduction for Kalamazoo Valley Museum Chemistry Day 2021

Act I

Follow the story of Dorothy from Kalamazoo, Michigan, on her tornado adventure to the Land of Oz and back.

Act II

Dorothy discovers her house has accidently landed on the Wicked Witch of the East. She meets her sister, the Wicked Witch of the West, and gets advice on how to find her way home from Glinda the Good Witch.


Dorothy, Trout, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion start on their adventure following the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City.

Act IV

In the Emerald City, Dorothy and her friends prepare to meet the Wizard of Oz. He agrees to grant their wishes if they can secure the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Act V

The Wicked Witch is defeated, and her broom is taken back to the Wizard of Oz. The Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion have their wishes granted, and Dorothy finds her way home.
