Group Visits

Arranging a Visit to Kalamazoo Valley Museum

Walk-in groups are welcome for self-guided tours through our permanent and special exhibits.

General Admission and all exhibits are always free, but pre-registrations is recommended and appreciated.

For groups that pre-register at least two weeks in advance, Kalamazoo Valley Museum is pleased to offer the following special educational activities and experiences.

  • Step 1: Choose Your Programs

    Self-Guided Tour (All Ages)

    Teachers may bring students to self-guide through our permanent and special exhibits and science Innovation Lab. Museum staff is on hand to assist. General Admission and all exhibits are always free, but pre-registrations is recommended and appreciated.

    Preschool – Burton Henry Upjohn Children’s Landscape Early Childhood Explorations
    This area is temporarily closed. 

    Children’s Landscape is a self-directed hands-on exhibit for families and preschool groups filled with educational materials. Literacy-based Circle Time programs in this space may include musical activities, games or art projects. 

    Planetarium Group Shows

    $3/student and $1/chaperone ($45 minimum fee), about an hour
    The planetarium offers shows at age-appropriate levels for Pre K through Grade 12 on topics such as science, space, world culture, Great Lakes, weather and more. Choose from our most popular educator-selected shows below or from a list of over 50 offerings. Select options available in Spanish language.

    $3/student and $1/chaperone ($45 minimum fee)

    Science and history workshops are hands-on learning programs developed for a great experience with connections to Michigan Curriculum Standards.

  • Step 2: Book Your Visit

    Book your visit up to a year and no less than two weeks in advance.     Group Visit Booking Form

    Provide the following information

    • Your name and contact information
    • Your school/organization’s name and mailing information
    • Names and email of other teachers who will be accompanying the group
    • Desired program(s)
    • Dates and arrival/departure times (Have 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices)
    • Grade level or ages of children in group and accommodation needs
    • Approximate number of students and adults
    • Email address to receive the confirmation and future correspondence related to your visit

    You will receive a confirmation of your visit by email.
    When the confirmation is received, your booking is official.


    • Can be paid upon your arrival at the museum front desk by cash, check or credit card
    • Planetarium, Innovation Lab and Workshops are $3 per student
    • There is a minimum charge of $45 per group for all fee-based programs
    • Billing can be deferred until after your visit and paid via invoice
    • School employees are free with ID badge
    • $1 per chaperone for fee-based programs

    Groups should bring one adult per six students for the best student experience. Extra chaperones will be admitted to programs, if space permits, for the usual chaperone fee of $1 per person.

  • Step 3: The Day You Visit

    1. Check in at the front desk.
    2. Your class will be provided with a designated storage bin for coats, lunches, bags, etc. (Kalamazoo Valley Museum is not responsible for lost or stolen property.)
    3. Adults will be provided with badges to identify them as members of your group.
    4. Museum staff will provide a short orientation for students and chaperones. Students must stay with chaperones at all times.

    Parking Tips

    Bus parking must be reserved prior to our visit though Central City Parking at (269) 342-6383. Students can be unloaded in front of the museum or on the side of the building on Eleanor Street. Car parking is available at the Eleanor Ramp, which accepts cash and credit cards. The Kalamazoo Valley Museum does not validate visitor parking.

    Helpful Hints

    • Bathrooms are located on the first and second floors. A map of bathroom and drinking fountain locations is available at the front desk.
    • Flash photography is not permitted.
    • Food and drinks are permitted on the first floor only.
    • You may choose to eat lunch inside on the floor near the planetarium or outside in one of the many surrounding parks.
    • The Kalamazoo Valley Museum does not have a gift shop.
    • There is a penny press at the front entrance.
    • Playground equipment is located at the Arcadia Creek Festival Site behind the museum.

    Cancellations and Late Arrivals

    When weather conditions require school cancellations, we will attempt to reschedule your visit. If your school/group arrives more than 10 minutes after the scheduled start of your planetarium program, the museum reserves the right to substitute a shorter show, if time allows, and/or will attempt to fit your group into the next scheduled show.

    Cancellation Fees

    If you cancel with less than two weeks’ written notice, your school/group will be billed a late cancellation fee of $45 per program. This fee will not be charged if your school or the museum is closed due to inclement weather. Schools will not be able to book further programs until the late fee is paid.
